All Little High neighborhood residents, friends, family, visitors, and persons of good will are invited to a bonfire hosted by the Little High neighborhood association on Sunday, November 10, 7-9pm in the backyard of 1201 Little High (on the corner of Little High and 12th streets). In addition to the fire, the neighborhood association will provide hot cider, s’mores-making supplies, and a few extra chairs. You should bring yourselves and maybe a folding chair in case we don’t have enough. This is a lovely opportunity to come and hang out with and get to know your neighbors. Please join us!

Progress on sidewalks at last!
City Manager Sam Sanders has taken seriously the complaints of many Charlottesville residents about the lack of adequate sidewalks and he has made sidewalk construction a top priority. An adequate sidewalk network is essential as the city’s population density increases while the need to reduce our carbon footprint remains imperative. We all have to walk more, and now the city is working to take away our excuses.
Here is a link to the city’s list of sidewalk projects and the priority assigned to each. We certainly aren’t getting everything we wanted for our neighborhood but we don’t begrudge other neighborhoods getting better sidewalks and something is better than nothing. Check it out and decide for yourself.
Harvey Brown (1933-2023)
Our friend and neighbor Harvey Brown passed away November 30, 2023 (read his obituary here). Harvey lived on Meriwether Street with his wife of 69 years, Mabel, since the early 1960s. Harvey was a good neighbor and a charming man and he will be missed. He shared a lot of interesting stories about the way things were when he and his wife moved to Meriwether Street in the early 1960s.
When Harvey’s wife, Mabel, passed away a couple of years ago, the Little High Neighborhood Association paid to plant 10 trees in her memory through the Arbor Day Foundation. The LHNA has paid to plant three trees as a tribute to Harvey Brown (prices have gone up but if people would like to contribute to this project please contact our Treasurer, Julia Rubarth, and indicate what the donation is for). The trees are planted through the efforts of Forestry Services throughout North America who determine where the greatest needs for reforestation are. If anyone is interested in planting a memorial tree for Harvey Brown somewhere within our neighborhood, please let us know by contacting Jonathan Rice or Sumner Brown.
Missing Outdoor Cat
A semi-feral neighborhood cat whose home base is just off the intersection of Meriwether & 12th streets has been missing since Monday night. He’s very reliable about showing up to be fed so this is a long absence for him. The cat is male, silver gray, and named Percy. Percy is in good health and generally savvy about staying out of the way of cars.
One possibility is that he may have wandered into a garage or shed and gotten trapped inside. Please check your out buildings that aren’t frequently opened just to make sure Percy hasn’t accidentally been trapped inside.
If you have any information about Percy, please contact Ann at 434-466-2768.
Neighborhood Picnic 6/4/23
ALL neighborhood residents and friends are invited to the Little High Neighborhood picnic on Sunday, June 4, 4:30-6:30pm at Meade Park pavilion.
The neighborhood association is providing pizza, sides, desserts, and a variety of non-alcoholic beverages.
This is a great opportunity to get to know more of your neighbors, enjoy the neighbors you already know, and become involved in the neighborhood association if you are so inclined (definitely NOT a requirement).
This is also a convenient opportunity to pay your neighborhood association dues should you wish to do so (i.e., neighborhood association dues are purely voluntary). Neighborhood association dues are just $10 per family/household (although we will happily collect more to help us do even more for the neighborhood). Your dues help support neighborhood association activities like this upcoming picnic! You can bring cash, check or Venmo Little High neighborhood association Czar, Julia Rubarth at @Julia-Rubarth.
