Warning from the City about Illegal Short-term Rentals

May 12, 2026

The City of Charlottesville is “reminding” (a euphemism for warning) residents that Homestay permits are required annually for anyone operating a short-term rental (fewer than 30 days) within residential or residential mixed-use zoning districts (i.e., the bulk of our neighborhood). The City has identified individual properties that do NOT have Homestay permits. City officials made it clear in a presentation last December that they plan to go after violators to enforce compliance. The City has provided the following map to indicate which properties are complying / not complying with current Homestay regulations. The map provided by the City is not easy to read, but it appears that there are several properties in our neighborhood that are not complaint.

All property owners engaged in the short term rental market should make sure they are compliant with City regulations asap.

Take the Tree Survey by May 24

May 7, 2026

Have opinions about the City’s green spaces and how best to manage and protect them? Of course you do, so please take the brief Urban Community Forest Survey to share your thoughts, hopes, and advice for City planners. This is an important opportunity to weigh in on the future of our urban forest. Please complete the survey before 11:59pm on May 24.

** And after you submit your response, PLEASE scold City Planners for using an out of date map showing Charlottesville’s neighborhoods. It’s not a good sign that City Planners haven’t gotten the “news” that Little High is NOT a part of the Martha Jefferson neighborhood. This change went through a long time ago. If you have any uncertainty that Little High is indeed an independent neighborhood, see the City’s own website for confirmation:

Applications for the City’s E-Bike Drawing remain open through April 30

April 22, 2026

The City of Charlottesville’s three-tiered grant program to encourage residents to use e-bikes to get around town has a drawing every quarter of the year. Regardless of income, ALL adult (18 yrs and up) residents are eligible to apply for a $500 grant toward the purchase of an e-bike and/or certain related equipment from designated vendors.

The $1,000 and $1,500 grants are tied to income and/or participation in government assistance programs. You can check your eligibility on the City’s website.

Grant winners at any of the levels are chosen by a lottery drawing held each quarter. You have until April 30 at 11:59pm to enter the drawing for this quarter. The drawing will take place on Wednesday, May 6.

More information about this program can be found here and here and this is the link for entering the drawing.
