The City of Charlottesville is “reminding” (a euphemism for warning) residents that Homestay permits are required annually for anyone operating a short-term rental (fewer than 30 days) within residential or residential mixed-use zoning districts (i.e., the bulk of our neighborhood). The City has identified individual properties that do NOT have Homestay permits. City officials made it clear in a presentation last December that they plan to go after violators to enforce compliance. The City has provided the following map to indicate which properties are complying / not complying with current Homestay regulations. The map provided by the City is not easy to read, but it appears that there are several properties in our neighborhood that are not complaint.
All property owners engaged in the short term rental market should make sure they are compliant with City regulations asap.
Here’s a link to a community survey on the impact of short term rentals.
