Neighborhood Bonfire Nov. 5, 2023

All Little High neighborhood residents, friends, family, visitors, and persons of good will are invited to a bonfire hosted by the Little High neighborhood association Sunday, November 5, 7-9pm in the backyard of 1201 Little High (on the corner of Little High and 12th streets). The neighborhood association will provide warm apple cider, ingredients for s’mores, fire, some chairs, and introductions.

This is a great opportunity to spend some time with your neighbors, get to know some new people, embrace the darkness that is standard time, and get in touch with your inner Druid. We encourage everyone to bring a scary story* and at least one other neighbor. We also encourage people to bring extra coats, scarves, hats, sweaters, or gloves to donate for the Haven’s winter wear drive. We will talk very briefly about our program of organizing volunteers to help rake leaves and shovel snow. We will pass around a sign-up sheet.

* You do not have to tell a story. But if you do tell a story, your name will automatically be entered in a drawing for a gift certificate to a fine neighborhood establishment (Beer Run!). Other people who are eligible to participate in the gift certificate raffle: anyone who contributes to the Haven’s winter wear drive; anyone who signs up to volunteer to help rake leaves and / or shovel snow; anyone who has never been to a neighborhood association sponsored event; anyone who hasn’t been to one of our events in the past year; and everyone who brings at least one new neighborhood resident.

The fine print

One exception applies: the drawing for at least one gift certificate to Beer Run will only take place IF at least 10 new neighborhood residents or first timers or long-time-no-see-ers show up. So there’s your motivation as a storyteller! Hope to see everyone this Sunday, 7-9pm.

Leaf Collection 2023-24

The city of Charlottesville will be collecting leaves at the curbside for residents three times this fall / winter. Leaves have to be “loose” (i.e. unbagged) and you have to consult this chart from the city as to where exactly to put them for pickup. Please note: you are not allowed to put your leaves out more than three days before a scheduled pickup for your zone.

Leaves are collected by zone during a window of a few days. As you can see from the city’s leaf collection zone map below, most of most of the Little High neighborhood falls into Zone A but some of it (the area south of East Market Street to the railroad tracks) falls into Zone C. The use of gas-powered leaf blowers is strongly discouraged due to the noise and carbon emissions.

If you need assistance raking your yard for any reason, please contact the neighborhood association and we will try to arrange some help. If you would like to volunteer to help people rake their yards, please also contact the neighborhood association.

There is also an option to drop off your leaves rather than rely on curbside pickup. See the city’s website for location, available dates, and other details about the drop off option.

City Council to begin deliberations on rezoning plan Oct. 25

At their work session on October 18, the Charlottesville Planning Commission finalized a recommendation to City Council, with several changes proposed for the draft Development Code and Zoning Map. You can learn more about the recommended changes by watching the meeting recording, or by reviewing the materials for the upcoming Council work session on October 25. City Council work sessions do not typically offer the opportunity for public comment but you can attend the meeting in person at City Space on the Downtown Mall or via Zoom (zoom requires advance registration here).

City Council has yet to set a date for a public hearing related to the draft Charlottesville Development Code and Zoning Map. In the meantime, City Council will continue meeting in work sessions to discuss various aspects of the draft Development Code and Zoning Map.

Support the Haven’s Winter Wear Drive

The Haven is organizing a drive to collect winter clothing for local people in need. So dig deep in your closets and pull out your extra coats, scarves, hats, sweaters, and gloves!

Fall Neighborhood Gathering November 5th

toasting marshmallowsAll neighborhood residents, friends, family, visitors, and persons of good will are invited to a bonfire hosted by the Little High neighborhood association on Sunday, November 5, 7-9pm in the backyard of 1201 Little High (on the corner of Little High and 12th streets). The neighborhood association will provide warm apple cider, ingredients for s’mores, fire, some chairs, and introductions.

The bonfire is, of course, just an excuse for a general neighborhood gathering so come as you are but we encourage everyone to bring at least one neighbor and a scary story*.

If you would like to contribute to the bonfire, you can drop off wood and/or Guy Fawkes effigies ahead of time by adding to the pile in the backyard of 1201 Little High.

* Acceptable scary story themes include Halloween, off-year election anxieties, daylight savings time mishaps, deadly encounters with duct cleaning services spam, Guy Fawkes miscellany, scary neighbor stories from when you lived someplace else, or anything you’d else you would like to share.
