FREE Waterbath Canning Class

Just Food, Just Economy presents:

Waterbath Canning for the Home Kitchen

Monday, October 14, 5:30- 8:30pm

Join Michelle McKenzie from Bellair Farm to learn more about preserving foods and making value added products through waterbath canning. Dive into the basics of canning methods including a brief overview of small business regulations. During the session we’ll make one type of pickle (such as okra or beets) and one jam with in-season fruits. Each participant will have the opportunity to take home a jar of either the pickle or jam. Additionally, enjoy sampling previously made pickles and freshly made jam. This workshop is a delightful way to start preserving at home or to consider a small business.

No cost to attend but

Early In-Person Voting is Underway

In-Person Early Voting is available at the following location for the November 5, 2024 General Election:

Office of Voter Registration and Elections
City Hall Annex, 120 7th St. NE, Room 142

Early voting began Friday, September 20 at the office and will continue until Saturday, November 2.

The Office of Voter Registration & Elections will be open at the following times:

  • Monday-Wednesday and Friday from 8:30am-4:30pm.
  • Thursdays, 8:30am – 6pm.
  • Two Saturdays (10/26 and 11/2) from 8:30am-5:00pm.

City of Charlottesville transparency portal

City of CharlottesvilleAs part of City Manager Sam Sanders commitment to improving communication between residents and city government, the City of Charlottesville website now includes a “Transparency Portal.” Please check it out and see for yourself if it includes everything you think it should, is easy enough to use, etc. You can contact the City Manager’s office with questions or concerns — and let the neighborhood association know, too, so we can keep track of the city’s responsiveness to residents.

Public Meeting on Regional Housing Study

Join the Thomas Jefferson Planning District Commission to share your thoughts on affordable housing in our area. A new Housing Needs Assessment will examine housing issues in the Charlottesville region, focusing on affordability, availability, and needs since the start of the pandemic. For the proposed study, researchers will gather data, talk to community members, and explore solutions for low-income families, people with disabilities, and other groups. Help shape the direction of the study before it begins.

Your input will help shape this study, so come and share your ideas!

Upcoming Household Hazardous Waste and Special Collection Events

The Rivanna Solid Waste Authority (RSWA) is offering Charlottesville and Albemarle residents the opportunity bring specific types of  household items to the Ivy Waste & Recycling Center for FREE disposal. These special collections days are a great opportunity to rid homes of hazardous waste, such as pesticides and cleaners, as well as household items like refrigerators, mattresses, furniture, and tires.  For full details, please visit: http://www.rivanna.org/hhw/.

The specific types of household items listed below can be taken to the Ivy Recycling Center (address below) for free disposal only on the dates listed below.

Special collection days

  • Furniture/Mattresses: Saturday, 9/28/24, 8:30am -4pm
  • Appliances: Saturday, 10/5/24, 8:30am – 4pm. Household Appliances Include ONLY: refrigerators, freezers, washers, dryers, stoves, furnaces, water heaters, air conditioners, dehumidifiers, heat pumps, microwaves, toasters.
  • Tires (oversize tires will not be accepted; maximum of 12 tires per household) Saturday, 10/12/24, 8:30am – 4pm
