Neighborhood Bonfire Nov. 9

October 23, 2025

(updated Nov. 7, 2025)
Little High Neighborhood bonfire 11/9/25

All Little High neighborhood residents, friends, family, visitors, and persons of good will are invited to a bonfire hosted by the Little High neighborhood association on Sunday, November 9, 7-9pm in the backyard of 1201 Little High (on the corner of Little High & 12th streets). In addition to the fire, the neighborhood association will provide plenty of hot cider, mugs, and s’mores-making supplies. You should bring yourselves and something upon which to sit if you wish.

This is a lovely opportunity to come and hang out with and get to know your neighbors. Please join us — and encourage your neighbors to come because some very important things are happening.

Food Drive

Many people in our community and even within our neighborhood are experiencing food insecurity due to the federal government shutdown and the suspension of SNAP payments. Governor Youngkin’s initiative is helpful but it only covers 25% of what food stamp recipients typically get. The 40 or so Little High neighborhood residents who live at the Mews (just off the intersection of 11th and Little High) have been especially hard hit by these cuts so we are hosting a nonperishable food drive for them directly. Our goal is to collect as much non-perishable food donations as possible on Sunday (11/9) evening because the immediate need is great. Then we will continue the food drive for the Mews at least until SNAP benefits are fully restored.

At the same time, we are soliciting cash donations to the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank to help people in our community as a whole (Charlottesville has more than 4,700 residents who depend on SNAP benefits). You can give through the neighborhood association via Venmo at @LittleHighNA (you can also donate by check or cash at the bonfire) or by donating directly to the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank.

If you can help, please be generous because these are difficult times for so many. If you’re not in a position to help, no worries. If you need help, please contact the Neighborhood Association directly and we will do whatever we can.

One hundred percent of donations of money or of non-perishable food given through the neighborhood association will be turned over to the BRAFB and the Mews residents respectively. We mostly want to funnel the donations so we can see how effective this campaign is and so we can challenge other neighborhood associations to try to match or surpass us.

Donate Winter Clothing

We are also pitching in to help with the Haven’s Winter Wear Drive. Sunday night you can bring any gently used coats, sweaters, scarves, hats, and gloves you wish to donate and we will coordinate with the Haven to get the clothes to the people who need them most.

Please note: the Haven CANNOT accept clothing donations directly due to lack of storage space. Please see Haven’s Winter Wear Drive for more information.

Neighborhood Bonfire Nov. 5, 2023

November 4, 2023

All Little High neighborhood residents, friends, family, visitors, and persons of good will are invited to a bonfire hosted by the Little High neighborhood association Sunday, November 5, 7-9pm in the backyard of 1201 Little High (on the corner of Little High and 12th streets). The neighborhood association will provide warm apple cider, ingredients for s’mores, fire, some chairs, and introductions.

This is a great opportunity to spend some time with your neighbors, get to know some new people, embrace the darkness that is standard time, and get in touch with your inner Druid. We encourage everyone to bring a scary story* and at least one other neighbor. We also encourage people to bring extra coats, scarves, hats, sweaters, or gloves to donate for the Haven’s winter wear drive. We will talk very briefly about our program of organizing volunteers to help rake leaves and shovel snow. We will pass around a sign-up sheet.

* You do not have to tell a story. But if you do tell a story, your name will automatically be entered in a drawing for a gift certificate to a fine neighborhood establishment (Beer Run!). Other people who are eligible to participate in the gift certificate raffle: anyone who contributes to the Haven’s winter wear drive; anyone who signs up to volunteer to help rake leaves and / or shovel snow; anyone who has never been to a neighborhood association sponsored event; anyone who hasn’t been to one of our events in the past year; and everyone who brings at least one new neighborhood resident.

The fine print

One exception applies: the drawing for at least one gift certificate to Beer Run will only take place IF at least 10 new neighborhood residents or first timers or long-time-no-see-ers show up. So there’s your motivation as a storyteller! Hope to see everyone this Sunday, 7-9pm.
