Have you seen an otter in the Rivanna River? (seriously)

July 25, 2025

If you happen to spot an otter in the Rivanna River please report this to the Rivanna Conservation Alliance. The Rivanna Conservation Alliance is a local 501(c)(3) non-profit organization with the goal of working with the community to conserve the Rivanna River and its watershed through water quality monitoring, restoration, education, and stewardship. According to the RCA, otters have been spotted throughout the Rivanna River watershed. The RCA’s Rivanna River Otter Monitoring Project was created to document and monitor the presence of otters to help with its overall monitoring of the health of the Rivanna River. Otters depend on clean river water to survive, so the presence of otters in a given part of the river is a key sign that the water in that area is clean.

According to the RCA, otters are most active at dawn and dusk, but may be seen at any time of day. Just keep your eyes open whenever you’re within sight of the river and be sure to submit any sighting to the RCA.

Invasive Tree Walk

November 23, 2024

Members of Charlottesville’s Invasive Plant Partnership (CHIPP) will be in our neighborhood Sunday, November 24 to walk with neighbors and identify invasive plants and discuss strategies for dealing with them. The group will gather at 1137 Meriwether Street at 3:30pm.

This is a great opportunity to learn about what invasive species are and why they are a problem.

** All neighborhood and nearby residents are invited and welcome to join us! **

For more information, check out the City of Charlottesville’s website on how you can help contain invasive species and help regrow a healthy urban forest.

Our sidewalks suck — update April 2024 — LESS

March 23, 2023

Construction and maintenance of sidewalks is one of the most basic responsibilities of any city government. But generations of Charlottesville city leaders have neglected this mundane yet absolutely essential job. The Little High neighborhood association and many neighborhood residents have been asking city officials for years to help make our neighborhood more walkable by building more and better sidewalks. We’re still waiting.

Providing for this basic infrastructure need is especially important now because of the City’s pledge to sharply reduce carbon emissions within just a few years and because the new zoning plan will increase housing density. More people mean more cars no matter what the pious wishes of city leaders may be and more cars and more people mean it’s no longer going to be safe to walk in the roadways as we have long been accustomed to doing. The slideshow below highlights the many areas of our neighborhood where sidewalks don’t exist, end abruptly, or are inadequate and not compliant with ADA standards (among other things, ADA standards require sidewalks to be a minimum of 3 feet wide).

  • 12th Street near Little High
12th Street between Little High and Meriwether streets. The lack of sidewalks is a very great disservice to the elderly, children, parents pushing a stroller, and everyone else who isn't able to quickly get out of the way of an oncoming car.
  • Meade Ave and East Jefferson
Meade Ave and East Jefferson (area where there is no sidewalk is marked in red)
  • East High
East High. Where some stretches of sidewalk nominally exist, they are often too narrow for wheelchair or even stroller access very difficult. ADA standards require sidewalks to be a minimum of three feet wide.
  • East Market near 9th Street

  • Little High between 12th and 13th streets

  • 13th on the corner with East Jefferson

  • 13th and East Jefferson. There is no sidewalk on 13th Street
13th Street off of East Jefferson is a dead end street with no sidewalks on either side of the street
  • East Jefferson, near 12th Street

  • City sidewalk project November 2023
The city of Charlottesville is building a very short stretch of sidewalk in front of 1430 East High street (not in the Little High neighborhood but just a few blocks away) in November 2023. We applaud any and all new sidewalk construction wherever it happens in the city.
