Local Artisans Studio Tour, Nov. 8-9, 2025

November 5, 2025

Local artisans of all kinds will open their studio spaces to the public this Saturday and Sunday (11/8-11/9) from 10am to 5pm for the 2025 Artisans Studio Tour. Studios are located all over the city and the county, so please check the official artisans studio map to see what interests you. The event is so spread out that the official map isn’t set up to show the seven artisan studios in our neighbhorhood or within easy walking distance (studios 9-16 which make up the Central Region), so here they are (with most of the text shamelessly lifted from the 2025 Artisans Studio Tour website):

Studio 9  Inleaf Studio: 721 Park Street
Lotta Helleberg shares nature-inspired wall hangings, handmade artist books, and other fiber-related objects. Patrick Gibson creates contemporary functional ceramics.
Studio 10 Formia Design: 420 E. Main St. Suite A (on the Downtown Mall)
Mia van Beek, a master goldsmith, creates contemporary jewelry in precious metals and gemstones, inspired by her Scandinavian heritage. Susan Haas will display blown glass pieces that recall your favorite day at the beach.
Studio 11: 908 East High Street.
Gabriel Ofeish makes 18k gold and silver jewelry with both faceted and cabochon gems, as well as his patented Orbit collection.
Studio 12 Atomic 1183: 1023 Carlton Ave (very close to Peacock Auto Service).
Former neighborhood resident and the nicest guy you’ll ever meet Jeffrey Stricker will show handmade benches and tables featuring metal and wood. Krissy Maier creates one-of-a-kind bags using leather sustainably sourced from furniture company remnants and vintage leather belts.
Studio 13 Malleable Studios: 1304 E. Market Street, Suite T, just off of Meade Ave.
Tavia Brown‘s industrial yet delicate jewelry accents your daily life with beauty and an edge that celebrates your grit. [Read more…]

‘Autumnal Shed Show’ Continues Nov. 16

October 29, 2025

Neighborhood writer and musician Luke Foster has put together something entirely new and genuinely wonderful: the Autumnal Shed Show Series which is four weekly free outdoor concerts continung on Nov. 16 from 5-7pm-ish. The shows will all be held outdoors at the Shed at 301 Farm Lane, 22902, (just off of East Jefferson between 12th and 11th Streets) so please bring a lawn chair or something else to sit on.

Neighborhood Bonfire Nov. 9

October 23, 2025

(updated Nov. 7, 2025)
Little High Neighborhood bonfire 11/9/25

All Little High neighborhood residents, friends, family, visitors, and persons of good will are invited to a bonfire hosted by the Little High neighborhood association on Sunday, November 9, 7-9pm in the backyard of 1201 Little High (on the corner of Little High & 12th streets). In addition to the fire, the neighborhood association will provide plenty of hot cider, mugs, and s’mores-making supplies. You should bring yourselves and something upon which to sit if you wish.

This is a lovely opportunity to come and hang out with and get to know your neighbors. Please join us — and encourage your neighbors to come because some very important things are happening.

Food Drive

Many people in our community and even within our neighborhood are experiencing food insecurity due to the federal government shutdown and the suspension of SNAP payments. Governor Youngkin’s initiative is helpful but it only covers 25% of what food stamp recipients typically get. The 40 or so Little High neighborhood residents who live at the Mews (just off the intersection of 11th and Little High) have been especially hard hit by these cuts so we are hosting a nonperishable food drive for them directly. Our goal is to collect as much non-perishable food donations as possible on Sunday (11/9) evening because the immediate need is great. Then we will continue the food drive for the Mews at least until SNAP benefits are fully restored.

At the same time, we are soliciting cash donations to the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank to help people in our community as a whole (Charlottesville has more than 4,700 residents who depend on SNAP benefits). You can give through the neighborhood association via Venmo at @LittleHighNA (you can also donate by check or cash at the bonfire) or by donating directly to the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank.

If you can help, please be generous because these are difficult times for so many. If you’re not in a position to help, no worries. If you need help, please contact the Neighborhood Association directly and we will do whatever we can.

One hundred percent of donations of money or of non-perishable food given through the neighborhood association will be turned over to the BRAFB and the Mews residents respectively. We mostly want to funnel the donations so we can see how effective this campaign is and so we can challenge other neighborhood associations to try to match or surpass us.

Donate Winter Clothing

We are also pitching in to help with the Haven’s Winter Wear Drive. Sunday night you can bring any gently used coats, sweaters, scarves, hats, and gloves you wish to donate and we will coordinate with the Haven to get the clothes to the people who need them most.

Please note: the Haven CANNOT accept clothing donations directly due to lack of storage space. Please see Haven’s Winter Wear Drive for more information.

Little High Fact Sheet, 2025

October 13, 2025

The staff of Charlottesville government’s Neighborhood Development Services department put together an impressive 2 page “fact sheet” for the Little High Neighborhood with lots of interesting facts and figures. Our neighborhood is the 4th smallest by area and 5th least populous neighborhood (1,048 residents) yet we have more population density than the city average. Our neighborhood has fewer children (11%) and slightly more old people (15%) than the city averages (16% and 12% respectively). The median home value ($545,000) is higher than the City average ($516,000) and we have a significantly higher share of renters (72%) and higher average rents ($2,300) than the city averages (61% and $2,100 respectively).

Our neighborhood is assessed as having much greater walkability than Charlottesville as a whole. But this is on a relative scale and it highlights just how unwalkable most of Charlottesville is. Our neighborhood has many large gaps where there are no sidewalks at all while many of our existing sidewalks are inadequate (too narrow for someone in a walker or a wheelchair) or in serious disrepair.

A couple of things I personally would like to see included in future versions: in the overview, stop whitewashing the history of “the Farm” and acknowledge that it was an antebellum plantation almost certainly built and maintained by enslaved people who were, at best, hired out from one slave owner to another. The Woods Addition part of our neighborhood, referenced in the fact sheet, had firm racial covenants in place part in place by the early 20th century, so it would be especially interesting to see current statistics about racial and ethnic diversity. As of a few years ago, our neighborhood was 80% white. I doubt that has changed very much.
